Prep notes: Royal softball standouts will sign together

Four Roy High softball players, with their seniors season yet ahead of them, will sign letters of intent to play junior college athletics on Wednesday at a signing party at the RHS conference room.

The signing will occur at 7:30 p.m., and friends, fans and family are invited.

"We thought it would be fun to all sign together," Roy catcher Caylie Phelts said.

Phelts will sign with Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad, Colo. Second baseman Payton Palmer will sign with Salt Lake Community College, while first baseman Bryce Mitchell and third baseman Jamie Aiken will both sign with Dawson Community College in Dawson, Mont.

Mitchell will sign in both basketball and softball.

The Royals won the state 4-A championship in 2009, finished second in the 5-A championship in 2010, won the 5-A title in 2011 and return to the 4-A ranks this spring.
