Utah drill team state titles up for grabs

The best drill teams in regions 1, 5, 6, 11 and 17 will take aim at state championship titles this weekend at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center.

The 5-A and 4-A championships will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. Saturday, the 3-A, 2-A and 1-A teams take to the floor from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Defending 4-A champion Bountiful will face strong challenges from 2011 runner-up Bonneville, as well as Mountain Crest, Box Elder, Sky View and Logan from Region 5, as well as Clearfield out of Region 6.

In the 5-A meet, defending state champion Bingham will face challenges from traditional Salt Lake-area schools, while Region 1 powers Syracuse, Davis, Fremont and Northridge, along with Viewmont out of Region 2, will battle for state supremacy.

In the 3-A competition, Canyon View is the defending state champion while Bear River finished fourth a season ago. The Bears are back for more, along with fellow Region 11 schools Ben Lomond, Morgan and Ogden.

In the 1-A competition, St. Joseph will battle the rest of the state’s best for the title.

Duchesne is the defending 1-A champion, while Millard is the defending 2-A champion.
