Girls basketball: Falcons hold out tourney hopes

CLEARFIELD -- Led by senior guard Mikenzey Wiberg's game-high 18 points, the Falcons picked up their third Region 6 win and kept their state tournament hopes alive with a 51-38 win over visiting Highland High on Tuesday night.

Wiberg helped Clearfield take a 24-21 lead at the half and the Falcons never looked back, keeping the Rams at bay with an 18-of-26 performance from the charity stripe.

"We shot very well on the line tonight," Clearfield coach Rebecca Packer said. "That was probably the biggest thing we did well. It was huge."

Highland had success at the start, led by junior guard Halie Bell, whose trio of first-half 3-pointers kept the Rams in front early.

Bell's nine points led Highland's scoring, followed by sophomore forward Dominique Needham's eight and senior guard Stephanie Kaufusi's seven points.

Aggressive play put the Rams in foul trouble early which paid off for the Falcons as the infractions meant easy points. Clearfield's Jocelyn Jones scored nine points and junior forward Kaitlyn Stratton contributed eight.

The win keeps Clearfield (3-5 in Region 6) in the hunt for a state tournament spot, putting the Falcons two games ahead of fifth-place East, which lost to Bountiful on Tuesday night.

"Our next game is against East," Packer said of their Friday evening night showdown. "Defense has been one of our strengths throughout most of the year and we'll really need to maintain our defense against them."

In other Region 6 games, Bountiful topped East 56-38 and Woods Cross hosted Cyprus.
